Stroke Risk Detection Using Retinal Fundus Images
With the VSL Analyzer Software
September 3, 2008, Lod, Israel. Talia Technology, the developers of Ophthalmic imaging solutions for diagnosis and screening of eye diseases, has recently launched an upgraded version of its VSL Analyzer –for stroke risk detection using retinal images.
About the VSL Analyzer
Talia’s VSL Analyzer, is used for analyzing the retinal artery/vein diameter ratio, which has been found to be a stroke risk predictor.
The product is based on the fact that the eye is the only organ in the human body where small vessels can be directly observed and assessed non-invasively and that the alterations observed in the ocular vascular tree are characteristic of the pathologic process occurring in the brain and other organs in the body.
The VSL Analyzer is a semi-automatic application that allows users to mark arteries and veins on a retinal fundus image. The proprietary software algorithm then analyzes the markings and provides a stroke risk assessment for the patient, compared to a normative database.
The VSL Analyzer is easy to use on the RTA system computer or any PC, analyzing a wide range of fundus image formats. It is naturally used as a stroke screening solution in primary care ophthalmic clinics.
The basic scientific background of using retinal vasculature for systemic risk assessment was investigated extensively in a series of epidemiologic studies – the ARIC studies.
The Need for Screening
15 million people each year suffer strokes and 5 million are left permanently disabled. Stroke causes substantial demands in individual, family and healthcare resources.
Early detection of possible stroke predictors and risk factors can lead to life-style changes and/or medical treatments that can prevent stroke. Early treatment saves lives and increases the chance of making a better recovery.
The Software Upgrade
The new VSL Analyzer software version improvements make the software easier to operate and include the following:
· Full support for imported images as well as RTA images.
· Last image format and last image brightness regulation preferences selection are saved.
· Font colour of the vessel size indication was changed for easier reading.
